Have you ever noticed how people with good, radiant and glowing skin stand out from the crowd? Everybody wants to have a clear skin. Several products such as facial washes and facial creams are out in the market which promises a clear and blemish free skin. We also spend a lot of money on facial cleansing and facial treatment. The skin is the largest part of our body and needless to say, it is the most noticeable part of all. Therefore, it requires special attention and care, so that its natural glow and radiance is maintained.

Do you know that the foods we eat highlight the condition of our skin? There is an old saying, “You are what you eat” and this is indeed true. There are foods that help promote good skin and there are foods that can actually cause skin damage. Let us discuss some of the foods which may harm your skin and how they do so.
Following is the list of the foods and products that you should avoid as they contribute to the production of acne and may even worsen it. You have to make sure that the products mentioned here are not included in your grocery list.

1. Caffeinated drinks – Commercials claim that coffee contains antioxidants. While that is a factual statement, coffee also contains caffeine that makes our skin look old and tired. Caffeine depletes the moisture from the body and skin. It takes away hydration thus making our skin look lifeless. It promotes formation of wrinkles and age spots. Caffeine is present in beverages like colas, coffee, tea and even hot chocolate.

2. Alcohol – This is another beverage that makes our skin dry. It also makes red veins appear on the surface of the skin. This is because of vasodilatation or the swelling of the blood vessels that is caused by the chemicals present in alcohol.

3. Processed Foods – In these modern times, everything is almost instant. This includes ready to eat and processed foods. These foods contain preservatives that are needed to maintain their longevity. Preservatives in processed foods contribute to the dull look on your skin. It also promotes the production of acne and other skin problems.

4. Dairy Products – These products are derived from cows and buffaloes and they have a high fat content and hormones. The hormones from the cow enhance the production of sebum which when trapped in the skin pores could lead to the production of acne.

5. Fats and fried foods – It is a common knowledge that foods which are high in fat content are bad for the overall health. They can cause heart attacks and other circulatory complications. Foods that are high in fats can also cause acne and skin breakouts. This is because high fat foods increase the production of sebum in the skin. Overproduction of sebum is not healthy as there is always a possibility of this getting trapped in the skin pores and causing an outbreak of acne.

6. Iodine – Foods that contain iodine are known to trigger skin problems specifically acne. In general, iodine is good for the development of the body and the maintenance of healthy thyroid gland. On the other hand, too much intake of iodine is not good for the skin. People who have acne should stay away from iodized foods like salt, seafood, canned vegetables, cured meats, and broth. It is wise to check the label of the food before consumption to see the iodine content level.

Now that you have some knowledge about the foods that are bad for your skin, the next step would be to avoid them. You are what you eat, so if you want to maintain a good and healthy skin, you must be careful while choosing the foods for your daily intake.
