Age-defying skin treatments, particularly the non-surgical types, are very much in demand and popular these days not only among females, but, among males as well. Whether its sheer vanity, social reason/s, professional career reason/s, or some medical condition that warrant or call for or require intervention, no doubt, men have increasingly sought and undergone such age-fighting treatments over the past couple of years. Unlike women who typically desire to look as young as possible when going through such treatments, men on the other hand, would normally ask for such cosmetic procedures not to totally eliminate wrinkles but just to rejuvenate their skins and sort of soften their age lines, to achieve a more “rested, relaxed, and comfortable” look or appearance as one reputable source puts it.

Men’s skin is typically rougher in texture and is 24% thicker than that of women. It’s also richer in collagen and elastin. Moreover, men’s skin is more susceptible to spots, blemishes, and acne because it’s oilier in nature. Similar to women, factors such as genetics, age, sun, stress, alcohol, smoking, bad diet, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, pollution, and dehydration influence men’s skin. Shaving which is a regular male hygienic routine tends to irritate and dehydrate the skin, causing it to age faster.

Apart from diet, exercise and the usual application of anti-aging skin care products (cleansers, facial scrubs, toners, moisturizers, creams, lotions, etc.), the top five nonsurgical cosmetic facial treatments most men prefer are:

1. Botox Cosmetic– Reportedly, most men choose this treatment to soften lines on their foreheads. Botox treatment basically involves the injection of very small amounts of the botulinum, a toxin targeting the muscle that is situated below a wrinkle. By temporarily causing a muscle to become immobile, the wrinkle or age line above it is relaxed, leading to a much smoother skin texture. The whole procedure commonly takes around 30 minutes to complete and is guaranteed to last for up to 6 months. Botox cosmetic treatment commands around $350-$500 per injection and there are cases when more than one injection is required.

2. Microdermabrasion– In microdermabrasion, a vacuum suction device is utilized in conjunction with a gentle chemical crystal formulation to get rid of the topmost layer of skin cells; thereby, allowing the growth of fresh, new skin tissues. Microdermabrasion works by reinvigorating the complexion, eliminating ultrafine lines, aiding externally applied skin care products to penetrate the skin more deeply and giving the skin a healthy, fresh “glow”. Skin treatment time lasts up to 30 minutes, but frequently, it takes several sessions for full results to manifest. This type of skin cosmetic procedure may last for several months depending largely on the condition and age of the skin. Cost of microdermabrasion is $150-$300 per treatment.

3. Laser Hair Removal– Laser hair removal depends on energy emitted by a laser to penetrate the skin and target the hair follicles, where it is absorbed by the melanin pigments. The damage done to the follicles causes hair to fall out gradually after the procedure and makes their re growth a lot harder. Most men have this procedure done on their backs and chests. Treatment time for laser hair removal may take as little as 10 minutes to as long as a couple of hours. Normally, 4 to 8 sessions are required, often scheduled, 4 to 8 weeks apart. This procedure costs around $400-$500 per treatment. For some people, the effects of laser hair removal can be permanent.

4. Chemical Peel– Men tend to prefer this skin rejuvenation procedure, particularly the light chemical peel, because it generally serves the purpose of revitalizing and refreshing their skins and at the same time, poses no downtime or recuperation period. A light chemical peel or lunchtime peel specifically takes about half an hour to complete. For optimum results, a light peel needs to be performed several times.

5. Laser/Light Skin Rejuvenation– The absence of any rigorous aftercare regimen makes laser or light skin rejuvenation treatment ideal for men. Laser skin treatment’s benefits include: toning and firming of the skin through promoting growth and development of new collagen; enhancing skin color and texture; minimizing fine age lines; and giving the skin an overall rested and renewed appearance. It usually takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete a laser skin treatment procedure and price ranges from $500 to $1,200 per treatment based mainly on the size of the area to be treated. Usually, 3 to 5 treatment sessions are needed. To attain maximum collagen production, successive treatments are required, while touch-up treatments are advised to maintain collagen formation stimulated.
